One Hundred Push Ups-Week 4

I have just completed my fourth week of the Hundred Push Ups Challenge. My days got thrown off a little bit so I’m behind schedule by a couple of days. I don’t know if the longer rest days has anything to do with it but the challenge seems to be getting impossible. The first day was pretty simple, but the other two were really really hard. I started the third day in the morning but could barely do 20 push ups, so I restarted them later that night.

I could only do 50 for my fit test, which is less than 2 weeks ago. I may do week four over again, or drop the intensity level down for the next week.

One Hundred Push Ups-Week 3

I have just completed my third week of the Hundred Push Ups Challenge. Week three was noticeably harder than the first two. The first day I was struggling, and then I went to the gym and did upper body on my ‘rest’ day in between day 1 and 2, which made day 2 hard. Day 3 felt pretty good, but it’s getting a lot harder.

Set 4: 14
Set 5: 40
Total: 100

Day 2

Set 5: 30

Day 3

Set 2: 30
Set 3: 20
Set 4: 20

One Hundred Push Ups-Week 1

I’ve heard some people talking about this neat one hundred push ups challenge, so I figured I should try it out. It’s basically a 6 week training program that has you doing sets of push ups so that at the end of 6 weeks you should be able to do 100 consecutively. It only takes a few minutes a day and 3 days a week. I’ve always been okay at push ups, but could never do 100. I maxed out at 50 once, but my average is ~20. I started the challenge last week and hopefully in a few weeks I’ll hit the goal of 100.

Initial Test: I managed 25 push ups (which puts me at a level 3 out of 7…1 being the worst and 7 being the best) .Even though I did more than 20 push ups initially, I’m still starting with week one.

Day 1
Set 1:  10
Set 2: 12
Set 3: 7
Set 4: 7
Set 5: 25
Total: 61
Day 2
Set 1: 10
Set 2: 12
Set 3: 8
Set 4: 8
Set 5: 40
Total: 78
Day 3
Set 1: 11
Set 2: 15
Set 3: 9
Set 4: 9
Set 5: 40
Total: 85

So far the program seems pretty fun. If I’m hitting 40 in the first week, it looks pretty good that I’ll be able to hit 100.

Agave Nectar: The Great Debate

There is a lot of talk about agave nectar in the health community. Producers market it as a flowing, heavenly, super syrup, guaranteed to sweeten your food and keep you healthy with a low glycemic index (LGI). Some health experts claim that it is heavily processed, and just as bad (if not worse) than high fructose corn syrup. When I started that reading people were ditching agave nectar because it’s the equivalent to HFCS, I admit, I got pretty defensive.

Bottle of agave nectar I just finished.

Newly emptied bottle of agave.

I was confused (and still sorta am), how can a company say their product has a low glycemic index, yet a doctor claims it doesn’t? Hence the reason for my research and this article. I’ll cut to the punchline: Purchase agave nectar from companies you trust and eat it in moderation.

Dr. Mercola’s letter and other health gurus are generalizing all agave and seem to be over exaggerating ”negative” health facts. A number of manufacturers openly dispute these “facts”.

Part of the problem stems from the marketing on agave. The fact of the matter is that agave doesn’t flow out of the big thick leaves of the plants and straight into your bottle. It is processed, sometimes with high or low heat, and sometimes with chemicals. It may or may not be raw, organic, and it may not have a LGI. It is true that some companies piggyback off the claims of higher quality brands-which is where the issues come up.

However, there ARE brands that are organic, raw, and not void of all nutrients.

Solution: Buy from companies you trust and do your research! I’ve found a few companies post their processes for producing agave online, or you can contact them directly.

If you want raw agave, make sure you check the label and if it doesn’t say raw or that it’s been kept under temps of 118° F. I thought that all agave was raw and assumed I was always buying a raw product. It wasn’t always the case.

Check *where* it has it’s certifications from. If it says organic, look for the USDA organic logo. If it claims to have a LGI check to see if it’s US certified or from another country that has different standards.

Other than that, do your own research, and listen to your body. Take clever marketing and negative hype with a grain of salt.

Some other info:

Dr. Mercola’s (scary) article This Sweetener Is Far Worse Than High Fructose Corn Syrup can be found here. He makes a LOT of claims about how terrible and nutrient void agave nectar is.

Xagave’s Formal Response to Dr. Mercola can be found here. It point by point refutes claims that are in the previous article.

Another article: The Truth about Agave Syrup: Not as Healthy as You May Think.

Probably the most informative manufacturer I found was for Volcanic Nectar. I found their site and based on the look of things, I expected a brief overview on how amazing agave is. Surprisingly, they were very thorough on how their product is produced.

DIY Taco Night

This is one of my favorite dinners. It’s super easy, everyone can make what they want, and eat as much as they want.

Ingredients:

Filling-Ground beef/refried beans/fake ground beef

Shells-hard/soft

Taco seasoning

Extras-Tomatoes, lettuce, onions, sour cream, salsa, guacamole, cheese, etc.

I like to use the fake ground beef and add in taco seasoning. One bag of the Morning Star or Boca faux beef is equivalent to 1 lb of beef. Mix with about 2 tablespoons of seasoning (or 1 packet) and 1/2-3/4 cup of water.  I also buy the Giant brand fresh salsa because it’s really just diced up tomatoes, onions, and peppers. Separate your soft shells with paper towels and zap them for about 30 seconds to make them warm and flexible.

How to Stop Procrastinating

1. Get organized-Knowing what needs to be done, in what order, and how long it will realistically take is half the battle. Writing out a game plan can help get you started because it may not seem like doing the actual work, but it IS doing something. Don’t assume it’s going to take you 10 minutes to write out that email if it’s really going to take you an hour. If you give yourself more time, it’ll feel good to finish with time to spare (just don’t let that time go to more procrastinating).

2. Find inspiration/get excited-Have a hard time getting to the gym? Look at pictures of people who are fit and imagine what you’ll feel like when you are in shape.  This may have to be a daily thing. Keep it fresh. Picture that dream vacation you’re going to take as soon as your project is done.

3. Start simple-You have a game plan, now start at the beginning. Do something simple to get the ball rolling, then don’t stop.

4. Caffeine-Sometimes stimulants are necessary. I am against the daily cup (or pot) of coffee to get moving, but sometimes you need a little pick me up. Yerba Mate is my current drug of choice. Not quite the caffeine content of coffee means I don’t get jittery, and I can drink it all day for a smooth level of alertness without the crashing.

5. Stop Googling “How to overcome procrastination” and reading productivity blogs- I’ve done it before: Googled “how to stop procrastinating” and that in itself was procrastinating from doing any real work.

6. Bore yourself to death-Say to yourself, “okay, well if I’m not going to work on project X, then I’m not allowed to watch tv/surf the internet either.” Get rid of distractions. If you’re forced to sit in a quiet room or cubicle with no form of stimulation, eventually you’ll want to do *something*, even if it’s work.

7. Don’t be a perfectionist-”I’ll do it later when I have more time” is NOT a valid excuse if you’re a procrastinator. I do this all the time with emails. I tell myself I want to write a really well planned and thought out letter, but I’ll have to do it later when I have more time.  The outcome is either never writing it, or writing it 2 months later when it really doesn’t matter anymore.

8JUST DO IT!!! Put everything else aside and just go. Whether it means writing a paper, coding, going to the gym, cleaning, etc. Just do it.
